Though the last Badminton Season has finished there are many things that the Junior Committee has to prepare for, before the 10/11 season starts in September. We believe that communication is key to successful team work. We warmly invite you along to a Parent’s evening for all current and potential squad members. This is to be held on Monday 12th July 2010 at Union Mills Football Club House, starting at 7.15pm. This will be before the Annual General Meeting, which you are all invited to attend. At this meeting we would like to have your views on: - How the Junior system is working. - How do you feel the new squad system is operating? - Sessions for next season - Off Island events both individually and team - Child protection courses - Badminton Helper awards for parents - Badminton official awards for parents - Coaching, umpiring - Competitions In fact anything to do with junior Badminton on the Island. If you find you will be unable to attend this meeting, we would be pleased to receive any comments you might have, either in writing to me at the address below or by email to philardern@manx.net

Representing the IOM this year were Ben Li (Capt), Brian Drew, Matthew Cannell, Matthew Nicholson, Cameron Avery, Ashleigh Keown (Capt), Laura Beggs, Georgina Li, Natalie Carter, Kayleigh Callow.
39 counties took part: in the 1st round the team faced Devon who had some top players. Brian Drew won his Boy’s singles and he paired up with Matthew Cannell to win the boy’s doubles Devon won 8 -2. Another of the top teams: Nottinghamshire were the next opposition. Brian once again won his singles as did Ben Li. Nottingham ran out winner 8 - 2 The final opposition in the group was Berkshire. It was anticipated that this would be a close match but the Island players had other thoughts 6 out of the 10 games went to three ends, the Island winning all of them. A wonderful win 8 -2 2nd round Bedfordshire were a very strong county; only Matthew Nicholson/Ben Li gaining a win at 2nd boys double. Result 9 -1 to Bedfordshire The team returned to their winning ways by beating Northamptonshire 7 – 3. The girls performed well at girls doubles. Both pairs Laura Beggs/Georgina Li and Kayleigh Callow/Natalie Carter had 3 long 3 end battles before being victorious. Worcestershire were different opposition. Ben Li & Brian Drew continued their wins at boy’s singles. The other win was at boy’s doubles Matthew Nicholson/Ben Li. Worcestershire won 7 -3 The first opponents in the final round were Somerset. Ashleigh Keown and Cameron Avery had a convincing win at mixed doubles which helped the Island stroll to a 4 – 0, winning the other mixed and both boy’s singles. Then Somerset hit back winning all girl’s singles and girl’s doubles. Brian Drew/Matthew Cannell and Matthew Nicholson/Ben Li secured the match, winning their boy’s doubles. 6 - 4 win to IOM Berkshire once again were the opposition, but on this occasion the score line was much closer. A 5 -5 Draw. The match was won on a count back, the Island winning on games won 14 to 12. The match against Cambridgeshire was a thriller to the end. The result was another 5 – 5 draw. This time the narrowest win went to Cambridge on count back. Games won 12 – 12 points 300 to 301. Final match of the tournament was against Cumbria. This looked on paper to be another draw; every player raised their game to avoid any disappointment. The Island put Cumbria under pressure from the start winning the four opening games and then never looked back after that. Ashleigh Keown/Kayleigh Callow at girl’s doubles had a magnificent win. IOM winning 7 -3. It looked as though the team had come 32nd but Cambridge went onto lose to Berkshire so IOM, Berkshire and Cambridgeshire finished on 3 wins each but the IOM had more games for than the other two. A well deserved 31st position. Thanks to Integrated Capability and Cu Plas Callow for their support.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Commonwealth Youth Games are to be held in the Isle of Man in 2011Anyone hoping to compete in these games will need to meet the criteria set out below:- STANDARD ACHIEVEMENT REQUIRED FOR ISLE OF MAN BADMINTON PLAYERS TO QUALIFY TO PLAY IN THE COMMONWEALTH YOUTH GAMES IN THE ISLE OF MAN 9TH 10TH & 11TH SEPTEMBER 2011.
Standards Required Must be able to demonstrate progress within recognised Under 19’s Badminton England tournaments or The Carlton Orbital Circuit, For those not able to compete in such tournaments, playing regular “Gold or Silver” tournaments within Badminton England Under 17 age group. Minimum standards necessary for an Isle of Man junior badminton player to be considered as a competitor are as follows: Achieve “Quarter-finals” or equivalent results on a consistent basis at Badminton England tournaments. Winner of any discipline in Isle of Man Badminton Tournament at Under 19’s age group or higher. Players have to achieve the standards in at least two different tournaments i.e. a quarter final in appropriate Badminton England tournament and Isle of Man Under 19/Senior Champion or quarter finals in 2 different Badminton England Tournaments. Achieve a min of 60% win rate while representing the Isle of Man in Senior County Team Matches. Represent the Isle of Man Badminton team, when requested. It is expected that players be in age group 16-18 years old – but if exceptional younger players meet the criteria and are judged to be capable of competing successfully then younger players may be nominated. Players however must be born in one of the following years: 1993,1994,1995,1996 or 1997. The above standards are to be achieved within the period of March 2010 to July 2011 For Isle of Man Commonwealth youth games 2011 Going to the Commonwealth Games Consistently achieving a quarterfinal placing is a good assessment of what an Isle of Man player would require to attend the Commonwealth Youth Games. A player obtaining this standard in England can expect to be competitive in the Commonwealth Youth Games tournament. Further Consideration Players achieving the required standard would not be at the Games to make up the numbers but would provide very real competition to other players. If a player achieves the standard and obtains the experience from attending competitions such as the Youth Games, they are inclined to progress further within the sport. Explanation of Badminton Events and Grading Introduction Badminton England have in recent years changed the structure of tournaments at under 19 age groups and below; introducing a grading system to provide a competitive circuit which provides for players from a wide range of abilities. As a result of this change “Gold”; “Silver” and “Bronze” graded tournaments were established and as you would expect from the definition of each tournament, a “Gold” tournament is more prestigious then a “Bronze” At the same time as grading tournaments, Badminton England decided to place a grading system on players, resulting in players receiving either a Grade 1; 2; 3 or “un-graded” grading in their age group. Further to this Badminton England stipulated that if a player was a Grade 1 player within their age group, they would only be eligible to enter “Gold” tournaments in that age group, and “Silver” or “Gold” tournaments at the age group above. A player being graded as Grade 2 can only enter “Silver” or “Gold” tournaments in their age group, whilst a player is graded as Grade 3 or below can enter any tournament he or she wishes. During the season a player can improve their grading by obtaining certain results. See appendix, A which explains how a player can move from being an un-graded player to becoming a Grade 1 player. The Under 19 circuit is classed as part of the Badminton England’s Senior circuit and it is only the under 17/15/13 events that are graded gold/silver/bronze. Why Badminton England Tournaments as a standard. The BE tournaments have been used as a standard due to the fact that Manx Badminton players are eligible to play for England as the Isle of Man Badminton Association is an affiliated member of Badminton England; plus these tournaments have an influx of international players from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and other European nations.
