------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 19th Liverpool open September 2007 The Isle of Man under-15 and under-17 team travelled to Liverpool at the weekend to compete in the 19th Liverpool Open. The U15 team comprised of Ashleigh Keown, Ben Li, Brian Drew and Sean Doyle, playing at Silver level, and Kayleigh Callow, Natalie Carter, Georgina Li, James Gifford and Matthew Cannel playing at Bronze level. The U17 players all played at Bronze level and the team was made up of Jack Quaye, Christopher Bulley, Christopher Moore, Baillie Watterson, Rebecca Hands, Louise Peat and Alex Bell. In the U15 events everyone played well. Kayleigh won all three games in her pool to progress to the semi-finals of the Bronze singles, where unfortunately she lost 21/16 to Marika Shand of Cumbria. Brian also managed to win his pool to progress to the quarter finals of the Silver singles, but unfortunately went out 12/15 15/9 15/7 to Robbie McDonald from Lancashire. Sean originally did not enter the mixed competition, but managed to find a partner on the day, Rae Larmour of Cumbria, and they both went through to the semi-finals where they were beaten by Lousie Breen and Robert John of Wales 15/16 15/12. The best result of the weekend came from Brian and Ben who managed to win all their games and progress to the final of the Silver Doubles, where they came up against top seeds Peter Athans (Lancashire) and Dominic Ashton (Cumbria). They went down 15/5 and 15/12 In the U17 competition Jack won all his pool games, reaching the quarter finals only to meet the eventual winner. Ballie fought hard in his group to win 2 out of the 3 games. Both his wins were very close 21/20 and 21/19. He went down in his third 21/16. Chris Moore and Chris Bulley both won 1 game in their group. Louise had the hardest group coming close in her last game losing 21/19. Rebecca Hands and Alex Bell both picked up one game in their group. Rebecca entered the tournament “partner wanted” and was fortunate to play with the Scotland’s number 2 U17 singles player. They played well to win 2 out of their 4 games. Alex and Louise won 1 game. In the mixed Baillie, with Louise, and Chris Bulley with Alex Bell won 1 game out of 3. The Isle of Man Badminton Association would like to thank the Steam Packet for all their help over the weekend and Peter Short, George Li, Sue Keown and Mary Doyle who travelled with the teams.
