As an Isle of Man Badminton Team, we are more than just a team; we are a community of passionate players dedicated to the sport we love. To ensure a positive, respectful, and enjoyable environment for everyone, we have established a set of rules of conduct that team members must follow when agreeing to represent the Isle of Man in our sport.  These rules are designed to promote sportsmanship, teamwork, and fair play among all our members.

By agreeing to play and represent the Isle of Man, we ask that you familiarize yourself and follow these rules at all times:

  1. Sportsmanship and Respect

Players must demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times. Treat opponents, teammates, coaches, and officials with respect, both on and off the court.

  1. Punctuality

Players are expected to be punctual for all practices, matches, and team events. Arriving late without a valid reason is not acceptable.

  1. Commitment

Players should show dedication to the team by attending all practices and games. Consistent attendance is crucial for team progress.

  1. Appropriate Attire

Players must wear appropriate sports attire, including non-marking shoes, during all matches and practices.  You must ensure all equipment is of a good standard, safe to use and helps reduce the possibility of injury.

  1. Communication

Players are encouraged to communicate openly and respectfully with teammates, coaches, and management. Discuss concerns and issues in a mature and constructive manner.

  1. Team Selection

When asked for availability to play in a team event, you must respond promptly in line with any deadlines set.  Failure to respond will be treated as an inability to play and will likely result in non-selection.  If you wish to be excluded from a particular discipline (singles, doubles, mixed) you must state this prior to selection, as this may alter the overall team selection and result in unfair exclusion of other players.

Please note that if you confirm your availability, are selected, travel costs are incurred on your behalf and you subsequently pull out of the team, it is likely that you will be required to repay your proportion of the costs incurred (usually 50%, but may differ depending upon the circumstances).

  1. Respect for Team Management

Players are expected to respect and abide by all decisions and selections made by the team manager(s). This includes but is not limited to match schedules, team formations, and any other managerial choices related to the team’s participation in tournaments, competitions, or events.

You must not seek to influence player/team selections, pairings and match team sheets.  You must therefore refrain from contacting or messaging team managers or selectors in order to effect any decisions, unless your views are sought by the relevant team manager or selectors.

While constructive feedback and open communication are encouraged, disagreements or concerns about team decisions should be addressed privately and respectfully. Public criticism or disrespect towards team management, whether in person or on social media, is strictly prohibited.

Trusting the expertise and judgment of the team manager(s) is fundamental to maintaining a cohesive and harmonious team environment. Players are expected to support and uphold the decisions made, understanding that they are made in the best interest of the team as a whole.

Remember, a unified team with mutual respect between players and management is vital for achieving our collective goals. Let us foster a positive atmosphere by honouring the decisions of our team managers and working together towards our shared success.

  1. Teamwork

Embrace teamwork by supporting and encouraging teammates. Work collaboratively during doubles matches and be gracious in both victory and defeat.

  1. Wholehearted Effort

Players must put in 100% effort for any matches or disciplines they are selected for, whether it be singles, doubles, or mixed doubles.  You are expected to give your best performance on the court and must respect the decision of any team or manager selections that have been made. Your commitment and dedication to giving your all in every game are essential to the team’s success.

  1. Self-Discipline

Players should refrain from any behaviour that could harm the team’s reputation. This includes avoiding substance abuse, offensive language, and disruptive behaviour.

  1. Focus and Concentration

Maintain focus during practices and matches. Avoid distractions and give your best effort in every game, showing determination and concentration.

  1. Adherence to Rules

Players must adhere to the rules and regulations of the game. Cheating and unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated.

  1. Representing the Team

Remember that you are representing the team and its values whenever you wear the team colours. Be a positive ambassador for the sport and the team.

  1. Continuous Improvement

Strive for continuous improvement in your skills and knowledge of the game. Be open to feedback and actively work on your weaknesses.

  1. Gratitude and Humility

Be grateful for the opportunities provided by the team and remain humble in victory. Acknowledge opponents’ skills and be gracious, regardless of the match’s outcome.

Remember, it is not about the quantity of matches you play but the quality of your effort in each one. Every match is an opportunity to showcase your skills, sportsmanship, and team spirit. By giving your maximum effort, you contribute significantly to the team’s overall performance and uphold the team’s reputation.

Failure to give your best effort during any match, regardless of the circumstances, is a violation of this code of conduct. Let your passion for the sport drive you to excel in every game, demonstrating your unwavering commitment to the team and its goals.

Failure to comply with this code of conduct may result in disciplinary action, including suspension, non-selection, or removal from the team. Let’s work together to create a positive and successful environment for everyone.

By adhering to this code of conduct, we can create a respectful, competitive, and enjoyable atmosphere for all team members.
